Like most people you may be asking yourself “why on earth is that cheesy French girl beret look back?!” Well as most, if not all trends do, this one has aggressively managed to find it’s way onto the Instagram streets straight off the Fashion Week runways. Dior’s Maria Grazia recently showcased the beret in leather in it’s Fall 2017 show and the currently very popular Gucci came through with berets as well in wool. Shortly after Marc Jacobs gave us 90s flash back feels with a 90s Kangol beret.
Just about a week ago Beyoncé gave the beret trend the official green light when she wore a leather beret with her stunning all-black outfit at this year’s Grammys. Now we all know it’s not the first time The Queen uses the beret as part of performance outfits- throwback to her powerful half-time performance at 2016’s Superbowl. She’s been using it as part of her political protest with one of her most outspoken albums yet, Lemonade. Note how she matches it with black lipstick too. Rebel much?
Iconic revolutionaries like the Che Guevara and Fidel Catsro were notably the first to sport berets before the American Black Panthers adopted the head wear in the 60s. The beret is the ultimate revolutionary accessory, hence Queen Bey’s choice of dress. Though it has deep military roots, on the flipside the beret has been worn by creatives alike such as movie and art directors, note Pablo Picasso and Brigitte Bardot and further Jon Lenon and Yoko Ono who were also known as intellectual free thinkers. In more modern and current times, the beret is fashionable to the woke and socially conscious millennial generation.
Fashion brands are aligning themselves with woke influencers in a bid to achieve depth while cashing in on political and social issues. Statement feminist T-shirts have become part of a lot of labels collections. You have to stand for something otherwise you will be called out for it!

I have seen every kind of creative beret look and trust they look nothing like the Parisian parody. These ladies’ looks off Instagram are proof of it (click their handle to view their Instagram profile):

You can get your beret in felt, fluffy, leather and wool to stay in the loop. And remember, you can wear anything whichever way you like. Fashion rules are meant to be broken.
