Make some space in your closet ladies because velvet is going to be creeping it’s way in this autumn/winter season! I kid you not, it is going to be the biggest fashion trend this autumn, right through to the colder months.
Now you know I am a sucker for deep and rich in detail items like I mentioned in my post about embroidery and that is exactly what I love about velvet. It is the look of luxury and gives off a bold regal statement in it’s jewel tones, you can’t miss it. I think it’s safe to say that Balmain definitely revived velvet in their 2015 sold-out-in-minutes collaboration with H&M. Gone are the days when velvet was reserved for romantic evening wear for the more mature and dark gothic looks. That collection by far is one of the best outstanding I’ve seen yet with a new appeal to a much younger generation with their #BalmainArmy.
There are not many rules on how to rock this trend. Sticking to one velvet item will do the trick keeping in mind that the texture is quite heavy looking. It can be it an accessory or garment but you’ll look great with just one item. Also keep to bold metalic and jewel accessories. And when it does get really chilly in the winter time just layer on with a leather jacket or fur coat and a semi-thin turtle neck. My personal favourite velvet item is a blazer as worn by Kefilwe Mabote:
By the way you can find some really stylish vintage velvet goodies at thrift stores, trust me just give thrifting a go and you’ll find some crazy amazing gems.
